CALEA – Communications Assistance to Law Enforcement Act
LEA – Law Enforcement Agency
Tap(s) – The point in the network where information is gathered
Probe – The device used to instruct the Tap on what information to gather and to transmit the information to the Mediation Server
Mediation Server – The point where information is translated into the format requested by the LEAs
VPN Tunnel – The secure connection through the Internet, between either the Mediation Server and the Probe or between the Mediation Server and the LEA
TTP – Trusted Third Party – Entity authorized to interface with the LEA on the behalf
of the CALEA Responsible Party
CALEA Responsible Party – Entity who ‘owns’ the end user, who is subject to the intercept request
IP Video Telephony – Format where video signals are sent across the internet for home reception.
These signals can also be used for Video Relay Service
Video Relay Service - A form of Telecommunications Relay Service (TRS) that enables persons with hearing disabilities who use American Sign Language (ASL) to communicate with voice telephone users through video equipment rather than through typed text
PSTN – Public Switched Telephone Network, utilized in the transport and transmission of common
telephone conversations
Warrants – The instrument utilized by LEAs and others to legitimately request the interception of specific information to or from an end user
